National Organic Training Skillnet and Organic Growers of Ireland bring you a farm walk on Tuesday 10th July 2012 in Teagasc Kinsealy Co Dublin at 7pm
All farm walk attendees are asked to assemble in the Centre at 7pm sharp, parking is available at the centre and there will be tea and biscuits on arrival. Non members of the OGI will be asked for a donation on the night.
Dr Kim Reilly will give a short powerpoint presentation of her work to date researching Organic Vegetables. The study is a Phytochemical study (the study of bio-actives in plants) based on a vegetable plot which Kim is working on; the objective of the trial is to investigate the effect and interaction between production systems components (a) soil management and (b) pest control measures, that differ between organic and conventional systems, on phytochemical accumulation in 2 varieties each of carrot, onion and broccoli. The trial started in 2009 and has continued for the past 3 years. The main areas being examined are phenolics, flavonoids, soil ecology. The results to date are very positive and show differences with varieties, plot management and microbial counts. Kim will present her findings to date and also will conduct a site visit to the trial area.
The Organic Growers of Ireland organise a number of farm walks on a variety of horticultural holdings every summer. This should not necessarily be seen as an endorsement by the OGI of the practices on these holdings.
